Y Felinheli Guide

Y Felinheli, a small port village on the Menai Strait in North Wales, offers fantastic cottage holidays with hot tubs. The village sits between Bangor and Caernarfon, making it an ideal base for exploring Snowdonia National Park and Anglesey.

The area boasts several top attractions including Greenwood Family Park (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) and the historic Caernarfon Castle (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor). Nearby Penrhyn Castle features stunning gardens and impressive architecture.

Y Felinheli has an interesting maritime history - the village was once home to a thriving shipbuilding industry. Local legend claims that Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor stayed nearby while filming in the 1960s.

Sightseeing

Y Felinheli puts you right in the middle of North Wales' best bits. We love how easy it is to get everywhere from here. Caernarfon Castle is just 5 miles away and scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor with over 5,000 reviews. It's massive and you can walk the walls for great views.

Snowdonia National Park starts practically on your doorstep. The Llanberis Path up Snowdon begins just 8 miles away. If you don't fancy the climb, the Snowdon Mountain Railway (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) takes you to the summit without the effort.

Anglesey is a quick drive across the Britannia Bridge. We recommend South Stack Lighthouse (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) for amazing coastal views and Beaumaris Castle (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) for history fans. The village itself has a lovely marina where you can watch boats coming and going before heading back to your hot tub.

Pet Friendly

Dogs love Y Felinheli! The coastal path offers miles of walking with sea views. Your four-legged friend will have a brilliant time sniffing around the shoreline and exploring the woodland paths.

The Garddfon Inn (LL56 4JH) welcomes dogs in their bar area and outdoor seating. They serve food daily 12-9pm and have water bowls for thirsty pups. The Vaynol Arms (LL56 4JX) is another dog-friendly pub with a good beer garden.

Nearby Newborough Beach on Anglesey allows dogs on specific sections year-round. It's got miles of sand and pine forest walks. I always take poop bags and a towel for muddy paws before letting the dog back in the cottage hot tub area!

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Y Felinheli

Greenwood Family Park (LL55 3AD) is Wales' most eco-friendly attraction. Open 10am-5pm daily from March to October. The Green Dragon roller coaster is powered by people! Kids push it uphill then gravity brings it down. My nephew couldn't get enough of it. They've got a massive bouncing pillow and the longest toboggan run in Wales. TripAdvisor gives it 4.5/5 from over 1,800 reviews.

Plas Menai National Outdoor Centre (LL55 1UE) sits right on the Menai Strait. You can try sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding. They offer taster sessions for beginners and full courses if you want to learn properly. Open 9am-5pm daily. One visitor wrote: "Brilliant instructors made us feel safe even though we'd never been on a boat before."

Felin Honeybees (LL56 4PZ) is a small local apiary where you can learn about beekeeping and honey production. They run tours on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11am (booking essential). The honey ice cream is amazing! A TripAdvisor reviewer said: "Fascinating insight into bee life and the tastiest honey I've ever had."

Is Y Felinheli good for families?

Yes! The village is safe and friendly. Greenwood Family Park is perfect for kids of all ages. The coastal location means plenty of beach days and the cottages with hot tubs give parents somewhere to relax after busy days out.

Can I get around Y Felinheli without a car?

It's possible but tricky. There's a bus service connecting to Caernarfon and Bangor (about hourly). Taxis are available but for exploring Snowdonia and Anglesey properly, I'd recommend having your own transport.

What's the best time to visit?

May to September gives the best weather for enjoying your hot tub and outdoor activities. July and August are busiest. I like June when it's warm but quieter. Winter visits have their charm too - imagine watching a stormy Menai Strait from your hot tub!

Are there good places to eat in Y Felinheli?

The Garddfon Inn serves excellent pub food with local seafood specialties. The Swellies Café does great breakfasts and lunches. For something special, Sosban & The Old Butchers on Anglesey (20 minutes away) has held a Michelin star.

What's the nearest beach?

Y Felinheli has a small shingle beach by the marina. For proper sandy beaches, head to Newborough (20 minutes) or Dinas Dinlle (15 minutes). Both have miles of sand and stunning mountain views.

Can I bring a boat to Y Felinheli?

Absolutely! The marina has visitor moorings and a slipway. Contact Y Felinheli Marina (01248 670176) in advance to arrange. Some cottages even have private moorings.
