Chwilog Guide
Chwilog's cottages with hot tubs offer a perfect North Wales getaway. This small village near the Ll?n Peninsula combines countryside peace with coastal proximity, making it ideal for exploring both landscapes while returning to your own private hot tub.
Nearby attractions include Criccieth Castle (4.5/5 TripAdvisor) just 3 miles away and the Italian-inspired village of Portmeirion (4.5/5 TripAdvisor) within 10 miles. The Ffestiniog Railway (4.5/5 TripAdvisor) provides spectacular mountain views without driving.
Chwilog has an interesting connection to Welsh literature - the famous poet R. Williams Parry wrote about the area in his works, celebrating its rural beauty and community spirit that visitors can still experience today.
Accommodation ranges from cosy one-bedroom cottages perfect for couples to larger farmhouses that sleep 8+. Many properties feature private gardens, wood-burning stoves and those all-important hot tubs for evening stargazing in this low light-pollution area.

Sightseeing
Chwilog sits in a brilliant spot for exploring the best of North Wales. You're just 3 miles from Criccieth with its impressive castle perched on a headland (LL52 0DP, open 10am-4pm daily April-October, 4.5/5 TripAdvisor).
The coastal town of Pwllheli is only 5 miles away with its award-winning marina and Wednesday market that's been running since the 1300s. It's great for picking up local produce to cook back at your cottage.
Snowdonia National Park begins just 15 minutes drive away. I recommend heading to Beddgelert (LL55 4YA), a gorgeous stone-built village with riverside walks and excellent ice cream shops. It scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor for good reason.
Beach lovers should visit Abersoch (LL53 7EY, 4.5/5 TripAdvisor) about 12 miles from Chwilog. It's got colourful beach huts and water that's surprisingly warm for North Wales. After a day on the sand, your hot tub will feel even better!
Pet Friendly
Many Chwilog cottages welcome dogs and the area is perfect for four-legged visitors. The local countryside has countless footpaths where dogs can run off-lead across fields and woodland.
Black Rock Sands near Porthmadog (LL49 9YB) is dog-friendly year-round - unusual for such a good beach. It's massive so there's plenty of space even in summer.
The T? Newydd Arms in nearby Abererch (LL53 6PD) welcomes dogs in the bar area and serves proper pub grub. They even keep dog treats behind the bar!
Most cottages with hot tubs have enclosed gardens, but do check the specific property details. We've found local vets are excellent if needed - Milfeddygon Deufor in Pwllheli (LL53 5UA, 01758 701285) comes highly recommended by previous visitors.
Top 3 attractions you have to see in Chwilog
Criccieth Castle (LL52 0DP) sits dramatically on a rocky headland with views across two beaches. Built by Llywelyn the Great in the 13th century, it later became an English stronghold. The exhibition explains its fascinating Welsh-English history and the views from the towers are spectacular. One visitor wrote: "Worth the climb for the views alone - you can see for miles on a clear day."
Portmeirion Village (LL48 6ER) is unlike anywhere else in Wales. This Italian-inspired village was built by architect Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975. With colourful buildings, exotic gardens and woodland walks, it's no wonder it scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor. They filmed the cult 1960s TV series 'The Prisoner' here. The ice cream parlour serves amazing Welsh-made flavours.
The Welsh Highland Railway (LL55 4TT) runs powerful steam locomotives through spectacular Snowdonia scenery. The 25-mile route from Caernarfon to Porthmadog is the UK's longest heritage railway. First-class carriages have huge windows and at-seat service. A TripAdvisor reviewer noted: "The scenery is jaw-dropping and the staff are so knowledgeable about the history of the line."
Is Chwilog suitable for a winter break?
Absolutely! Winter is when hot tub cottages come into their own. The area is much quieter and watching steam rise from your hot tub while surrounded by frosty fields is magical. Snowdonia looks stunning with a dusting of snow and local pubs light roaring fires. Many attractions stay open year-round.
Can I get around without a car?
It's challenging but possible. Chwilog has a train station on the Cambrian Coast line with connections to Pwllheli and Machynlleth. Local buses serve nearby towns, but services are limited. For maximum flexibility, I'd recommend bringing a car to explore properly.
Where's the nearest supermarket to Chwilog?
Pwllheli (5 miles away) has an Asda superstore (LL53 5YW) and a Lidl (LL53 5LH). For local produce, try Pwllheli's Wednesday market or Abersoch's delicatessens. Many cottages provide welcome hampers with essentials.
What's the best beach near Chwilog?
Black Rock Sands near Porthmadog is outstanding - a huge sandy beach where you can actually drive onto the sand. For something quieter, try Criccieth's East Beach which has great views of the castle. Abersoch and Llanbedrog beaches are excellent for families.
Are there good walks directly from Chwilog?
Yes! Several public footpaths cross the fields around the village. The Ll?n Coastal Path passes nearby, offering spectacular sea views. For a circular walk, try the 4-mile route from Chwilog to Afonwen and back through woodland.
Will I get mobile phone reception in Chwilog?
Coverage varies by network. EE and Vodafone generally work well in the village but can be patchy in the surrounding countryside. Most cottages now offer WiFi, so you can always use WiFi calling if needed.
